Durante walked over to the makeshift bed which had held Meghan earlier and examined the empty restraints. This was an interesting turn of events. He smiled. He loved when things surprised him, when things didn’t go according to plan. It was these moments which gave some meaning to his endless existence. Life without surprise wasn’t worth living. But this – he could have fun with this. Pinpointing her location with ease, Durante left. He had a busy night ahead of him.

David tucked the sheets around Nicole and watched her sleeping peacefully for a few minutes before he went out to the balcony where Mark stood, leaning on the railing. Mark nodded when he came out but remained silent. The two men stood together for several minutes, staring up at the night sky. David carefully kept his distance, both mentally and physically, giving Mark space he obviously needed. Still, they were too close for Mark not to know what was on his mind. They’d known each other for a long time.

“Am I that obvious?” Mark asked at last, still looking at the stars.

David shrugged. “Not so much. I wasn’t completely sure until just now.”

“What gave me away?” He glanced over at David when he asked the question.

“The way you looked at her. It’s the same way I feel when I look at Nicole.” David shrugged. “That, and the way you got drawn into the meditation. I figured there must be some kind of connection there for that to happen.”

Mark nodded. “Good observations.” David always was good at noticing things, but that was to be expected from someone who spent time on the street. He stood in silence again for some time before continuing. “I haven’t talked to Meghan about this. I’ve been trying to help her through everything. She’s been keeping so much pent up inside that she’s been a wreck. She doesn’t ask for help easily.”

David laughed softly. “Sounds like someone else I know.”

Mark smiled. “Yes, they do have a lot in common. But then, they have both been through a lot.” He was finally beginning to appreciate how true that was.

David nodded. “Yeah, I had no idea about everything that happened to Meg. She’s always been so upbeat and cheerful every time I’ve been around her.” He looked in the direction of the bedroom and sighed. Meg was a good person and a good friend. In the short time since they met, she had never been anything but kind to him. It killed him to see her going through this, knowing now what she’d already been through. As hard as it was for him, David couldn’t imagine what Mark was feeling. “We have to let her know she isn’t alone in this. She has friends.” Patting Mark on the shoulder, David turned to go inside. “You should get some rest.”

Mark nodded and let David lead him inside. Rest would be good. At least he shouldn’t have to worry about anything untoward happening here.
