Durante walked over to the makeshift bed which had held Meghan earlier and examined the empty restraints. This was an interesting turn of events. He smiled. He loved when things surprised him, when things didnât go according to plan. It was these moments which gave some meaning to his endless existence. Life without surprise wasnât worth living. But this â he could have fun with this. Pinpointing her location with ease, Durante left. He had a busy night ahead of him.
David tucked the sheets around Nicole and watched her sleeping peacefully for a few minutes before he went out to the balcony where Mark stood, leaning on the railing. Mark nodded when he came out but remained silent. The two men stood together for several minutes, staring up at the night sky. David carefully kept his distance, both mentally and physically, giving Mark space he obviously needed. Still, they were too close for Mark not to know what was on his mind. Theyâd known each other for a long time.
âAm I that obvious?â Mark asked at last, still looking at the stars.
David shrugged. âNot so much. I wasnât completely sure until just now.â
âWhat gave me away?â He glanced over at David when he asked the question.
âThe way you looked at her. Itâs the same way I feel when I look at Nicole.â David shrugged. âThat, and the way you got drawn into the meditation. I figured there must be some kind of connection there for that to happen.â
Mark nodded. âGood observations.â David always was good at noticing things, but that was to be expected from someone who spent time on the street. He stood in silence again for some time before continuing. âI havenât talked to Meghan about this. Iâve been trying to help her through everything. Sheâs been keeping so much pent up inside that sheâs been a wreck. She doesnât ask for help easily.â
David laughed softly. âSounds like someone else I know.â
Mark smiled. âYes, they do have a lot in common. But then, they have both been through a lot.â He was finally beginning to appreciate how true that was.
David nodded. âYeah, I had no idea about everything that happened to Meg. Sheâs always been so upbeat and cheerful every time Iâve been around her.â He looked in the direction of the bedroom and sighed. Meg was a good person and a good friend. In the short time since they met, she had never been anything but kind to him. It killed him to see her going through this, knowing now what sheâd already been through. As hard as it was for him, David couldnât imagine what Mark was feeling. âWe have to let her know she isnât alone in this. She has friends.â Patting Mark on the shoulder, David turned to go inside. âYou should get some rest.â
Mark nodded and let David lead him inside. Rest would be good. At least he shouldnât have to worry about anything untoward happening here.
